Today marked the grand opening of the Milwaukee Public Library's new MPL Express, the first fully-automated 24-hour library in the Midwest!

Similar to machines in San Diego and Fresno, Calif. and Purcell, Okla., the MPL Express offers many of the same services as brick-and-mortar libraries. At the MPL Express, located at 5550 N. 64th St., you can browse, return and even request items to pick up at any hour of the day with a valid library card.

Worry no more – now when you finish Book III of the Game of Thrones series at midnight, you can immediately go rent Book IV (Shout out to my fellow late-night readers and GoT fans)!

The MPL Express features popular fiction and non-fiction for children, teens and adults, in addition to CDs and DVDs that may be requested for pick up at the kiosk.

“MPL is pleased and excited to be among the first libraries in the country to offer this 24/7 service using a vending library,” said Library Director Paula Kiely in a press release. “This new initiative supports our mission and vision of expanding access to Milwaukee Public Library.”

Although I'm a big believer in actually going to the fully-non-automated library, this handy digital vendor essentially does for libraries what ATMs did for banks. After all, don't we all hate going to the bank?

So great job, Milwaukee, and your public library too! Way to innovate and create even more access to knowledge and entertainment for your community and patrons! However, here's too hoping that, unlike the bank, I never get sick of making a trip to my local library. But for some strange reason, I think that might be impossible ...

MPL Express at Silver Spring is a collaboration between the Milwaukee Public Library and the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee’s Westlawn Gardens.
